i don't think i could trace back my family, its too complicated. on my mums side its possible since my granddad knows bout his parents etc, like my grandma too. but the first one lived in Berlin so the war destroyed everything,n the second doesn't have so many papers no more because of war too but they can trace it back abit more. my dads side is complicated.he grew up kind of in the jungle of Venezuela so there was not alot going on with papers.... he has 6 siblings but besides 1 there all from different dads. i only know the name of one of my uncles n my granddad cause hes called like my dad. n the other names i have no clue??? i send him n email asking him for names n dates for minimum the people that are close related to him , but he just send me n email from his brother n a cousin. besides i know i have a humongous family, we counted that i have round 40/50 cousins that's just too much.... the only (interesting) thing i know bout my family is that my greatgreatgreatgrandma was a real india,a medicin woman even... and that my greatgreatgreatgrandpa was a african that fought for liberty in the revolution in 1811-1830 (im not so sure) but these facts are mouth to mouth stories no names no dates mayb i could do something talkin with my grandma (no name either) but who pays me the trip there???? |

Reply with quote | #18 | My moms dad was straight up black/white because his father immigrated to my country D.R. from Spain.... My grandpa's mother was decribed by my family as VERY african... I recently was recently excited to find out that my grandma besides having African and Spanish ancestry also is mixed with French as her biological grandfather had a French name which she didnt pick up because her grandparents werent married.... She has the more "European" looks in the family.....
On my fathers side my grandma also had direct Spanish heritage coming from her father.... As well as my paternal grandma who was of direct Spanish ancestry.... I wish I new more about them since this has always interested me... :\... I bet there is more info in my family but I hate asking them because there is still some racism and African denial in my family.... So all I could get is from them is talks about there European ancestry with is evident.... It sucks because I feel like the only one who feels pround of his mixed African ancestry but all they do is deny or down play it or say they dont care about it.... Its worse for me because I am a first generation Dominican American since i've lived in the US since I was 3 years old. I grew up in a different cultural environment and in a place where the attitude is different on race.
Another thing that sucks is that I look like a mixed dude and I beleive I clearly look african/european and people even confuse me for being bi-racial/mulatto when I often view myself as Latino especially culturally.... When people ask me "where are you from?" they are expecting an answer such as Euro/black, not what country since I look multi-cultural.... Its good sometimes too because people dont know in what category to put me in and I am kinda looked at in curiosity because of my look and for being exotic looking... Even other latino's dont know what I am...lol... So basically Im the awkward Dominican guy who looks more like a culturally mixed person as well and is culturally not Dominican enough ....lol :]

Reply with quote | #19 | Being such a family tree fanatic, that is how I found out that my great, great grandmother was mulatto (I strongly think so). She lived in France (used to be part of Germany).
France had a lot of former slaves from the island colonies in the Carrebean, who came to France to live free.
On this side of my family, my mom's side, we can go back centuries.
I have a close up photo of her (sitting) with 2 of her children. I altered the light and dark on the photo to bring out her features. Her son looks mixed, too. I think she may have been a quarter.
I never thought I had any Black blood, but my DNA test showed 1%. I think it is from her.

Reply with quote | #20 | Ive been doing mine since I was 18 and lots of it was given to me [only the white ancestors of course] it did make me connect with my white ancestry - before I had disconnected from them, knew nought abt them - it changed me alot.
But now im very keen to know about my african and other ancestry and since they are nameless and faceless i have to go with dna.I learnt a great deal ,I feel alot more connected to them just knowingsmthing small like my maternal dna [mtdna] is from mozambique is wonderful - its hard to intergrate it though because in the mirror you dont look at all black, but you certainly dont look white. Its difficult to connect with these people who you descend from but dont remotely resemble..I feel the same way about my euro ancestors I can't feel a part of it.
I still think i would never bring a mixed race child into the world because the longing for that sense of belonging or connection to a culture and people is too great for me.Maybe its because i'm so into history and heritage but I hate being seperated so strongly from the history and cultures I stem from.
E.g I could never go join the damara tribe which my g.g grandmother descends from in namibia they would laugh their heads off ,nor can i head down to eastern europe or england and try and be part of that when i went o england everyone treated me like another "evil arab migrant" coming to destroy the country having no idea that im african/etc/english etc and that my recorded history there is more than 800 years old. I love both cultures so much esp. my african and slavic ancestry yet I have to sit away from it all.
In s.africa in xhosa they have a word for you ,they use to call my dad the name it basically means "a thing" "someone with no tribe" .
